Fans of the Michigan Wolverines were able to stomach their brutal 2024 season with the promise of a top-flight recruiting class with their 2025 commits.

That promise was dealt a significant blow on Monday night. Four-star defensive back Ivan Taylor, son of former NFL DB Ike Taylor, flipped his commitment from Michigan to the Alabama Crimson Tide

Taylor was Michigan's highest-ranked defensive recruit in the class of 2025, and was their second-highest overall recruit. Taylor sits as the 41st-ranked player in the class, according to 247Sports' rankings.

This flip dropped Michigan from the 11th-ranked class on 247Sports to the 14th overall.

This news is a pretty stark loss for the Wolverines. Taylor, a high school safety, likely could have played early for Michigan's defense. Makari Paige, Quinten Johnson, and Wesley Walker are all graduate students who will be out of eligibility following this season. That leaves almost 1,300 snaps completely up for grabs on their defense.

With Michigan also losing Will Johnson to the NFL Draft, they need as much talent in their secondary as they can get. With Taylor no longer on the board, the concern about their defense skyrockets.

The Wolverines were able to flip four-star cornerback Shamari Earls from Georgia earlier this month and also have four-stars Jayden Sanders and Kainoa Winston in their class to help make up the difference.

I would expect Michigan to try and make up ground with other recruits and flip what players they can to soften the blow of Taylor's flip. They had Pitt commit Elijah Dotson in for a visit against Michigan State last month and the buzz has been building around Colorado commit Alex Graham. The loss of Taylor could be the final push Michigan needed to wrap these up. However, time is running out with the early signing period just around the corner.
