All three new Texas transfer receivers make big first impression on Longhorns fans
Isaiah Bond, Matthew Golden, Silas Bolden all flash in the first half as Texas runs up 31-0 lead
No matter how many standout receivers Texas may assemble, there’s still only one football. It’s up to coach Steve Sarkisian to show how everybody can contribute via his play-calling.
If Saturday’s first half is any indication, the Longhorns should have a rather happy locker room.
Quarterback Quinn Ewers spread the ball around to 10 different players in the first half as Texas ran up a 31-0 lead on Colorado State. Alabama transfer Isaiah Bond had a team-high five catches for 61 yards while Houston transfer Matthew Golden had two touchdown catches (1 and 11 yards)
Texas HC Steve Sarkisian releases two-deep roster hours prior to facing Colorado State
While other teams tip their hand early in the week, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian usually doesn’t release his depth chart until closer to kickoff. The Longhorns finally pulled the curtain back on their two-deep on Saturday. Eyes immediately dart to running back. CJ Baxter was the team’s returning starter last season, but he suffered torn […]
Oregon State transfer Silas Bolden can’t be forgotten, either. Bolden flashed his trademark speed late in the first half with a 35-yard return down the western sideline to set up a short scoring drive.
Freshman Ryan Wingo got two catches for 25 yards, and tight end Gunnar Helm even had a nice catch over the middle for 37 yards.
Sarkisian came into Saturday’s game with a plan to rotate a bunch of players. The Longhorns listed eight receivers on their two-deep depth chart passed out to reporters hours before kickoff.
Recruits at home were watching, no doubt. Texas had already secured the services of five-star receiver Kaliq Lockett from Sachse, Texas, who committed Aug. 7. The Longhorns picked up another five-star prospect on Friday when Jaime Ffrench committed at his high school in Jacksonville, Fla.
Lockett and Ffrench are likely the best 1-2 receiving combo in the class of 2025. They’re expecting to come in and catch passes from Arch Manning next season. But Sarkisian will still be the play-caller.
The more Sarkisian and Ewers can spread the ball around while the offense is having success, the better.
