Yes, the Kansas City Chiefs are greatly set up to win their third Super Bowl in a row with an improved roster on the offensive side. However, that doesn't mean they don't have holes and question marks on the defensive side of the ball — the side that was better last year.
The departure of L'Jarius Sneed, a top-three cornerback in the league, has left a significant gap in the cornerback room. While Trent McDuffie is established as a star, the depth behind him, along with players like Joshua Williams, Jaylen Watson, and Nazeeh Johnson, introduces uncertainty. This position group's performance could determine how well the Chiefs' defense holds up against top-tier passing offenses, especially in crucial games.
Training camp has been largely about position battles. It seems the one people have focused on a ton is the left tackle battle, which is, well, no longer a battle. It's pretty clear and has been for a minute now that Kingsley Suamataia is the starter there. The other position battle is for the guy who will play across from Trent McDuffie. They still aren't sure of that.
Their cornerback depth isn't the best and could definitely be improved. So, they are looking on the outside to try and help that.
According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2, the Chiefs are working out Gregory Junior, a cornerback they worked out in 2022 during the draft process.
Junior was recently on the Jacksonville Jaguars and is still a fairly young player who was recently waived by the Jaguars on an injury settlement.
After being drafted in 2022, Junior spent most of his rookie year on the practice squad but was signed to the active roster late in the season. His role was primarily to add depth, with limited game experience.
Junior showed significant improvement during the preseason, earning high marks for his performance, including a standout game where he forced a fumble, recovered a fumble, and intercepted a pass. This performance hinted at his potential as a slot cornerback, where he was targeted minimally and allowed no catches in primary coverage. However, his season was marred by injuries; he was placed on injured reserve early in the season.
Now, the Chiefs think there is a chance he may be able to help with the depth of this team. If they sign him, that means they're confident in his abilities.
Chiefs can find much-needed secondary help through cornerback prospect
The Kansas Chiefs have a need that is very apparent after the big free agency period. Trading away Tyreek Hill only leaves people believing more and more that they will take a receiver in the first round. However, they now have two first-round picks, in which they are back-to-back. While one pick may or may […]
