It's been an up-and-down season for the Texas A&M Aggies and Saturday's game against the Florida Gators started out with the news of quarterback Conner Weigman being out with a shoulder injury.
Over his three seasons in College Station, Weigman has missed a significant amount of time, including suffering a season-ending foot injury in just the fourth game against the Auburn Tigers. With Weigman being out, Marcel Reed got the start and thrived, helping the Aggies get a 33-7 lead late in the third quarter.
ESPN's Jesse Palmer calls for unique solution for Texas A&M
With all the success that Reed had against the Gators, including three touchdowns in the first 40 minutes, ESPN's Jesse Palmer opined during the broadcast about both a potential quarterback controversy and a two-quarterback system.
A two-quarterback system is quite an interesting direction that they could take. It's also a gutsy thing to opine about. The one thing that separates Palmer with other analysts is that he was in a two-quarterback system for multiple years with the Florida Gators sharing time with Doug Johnson in the late 1990s under Steve Spurrier.
They wouldn't just rotate, they would rotate often. Palmer talked about how they would sometimes rotate quarters, series and even plays. Multiple times during his tenure would see the quarterbacks swap plays consistently and it worked well for the Gators, but that level of success hasn't been duplicated since.
It takes a special type of player in order to operate in a two-quarterback system and a coach who can navigate the choppy waters that it will bring from both a team chemistry and perception standpoint. Is Aggies coach Mike Elko the kind of guy who can do that? There is a chance we will find out.
If they don't do the two-quarterback system, Palmer did mention a potential quarterback controversy due to the success of Reed. With Weigman's injury history, that's a major thing to consider.
Whatever ends up happening with the Aggies quarterback situation, it's going to be interesting to see moving forward.
