Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers went down to the turf and called for trainers with 13:30 left in the first half against UTSA. Coach Steve Sarkisian would later say Ewers had a "strained abdomen" before heading into halftime.

Backup quarterback Arch Manning began warming up and entered the game with the Longhorns leading 14-0.

On Manning's first play, he didn't waste any time. Manning found DeAndre Moore for a 19-yard touchdown, giving Texas a three-score lead.

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian has insisted that he wanted to get Manning in for "significant" playing opportunities this season. Manning is widely expected to be the Longhorns' starting quarterback in 2025 as Ewers is likely headed to the NFL Draft.

Ewers got off to a terrific start against UTSA, opening the game going 7-for-8 on Texas' first touchdown drive. But on the next possession, Ewers threw an oddball into no-man's-land as UTEP made an easy interception. If not for Texas running back Quintrevion Wisner making the tackle, the Roadrunners would've had a pick-six.

After that drive, Ewers appeared to have a minor issue with his thumb. But he returned to the field.

Ewers led another touchdown drive capped by Johntay Cook II's 19-yard touchdown catch. But then Ewers went down in the second quarter and went into the medical tent, opening the door for Manning.
