Atlanta Falcons safety Justin Simmons got Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes again.
Simmons picked off Mahomes in the endzone late in the first quarter during the Chiefs 22-17 win over the Falcons. The pass was intended for tight end Noah Gray, but as Mahomes told reporters after the game, the play was doomed from the start.
"We had a miscommunication with how we were going to pick up the pressure, and then I can't force it," Mahomes said. "I was going to high-low corner (of the endzone) and Trav (Travis Kelce) and 83 (Gray) and try to beat Simmons with the ball, but obviously got sped up a little bit. But, you can't force it. I mean, those are mistakes that you can't make in the red zone and and I seem like I make it to Simmons every time I play him."
Simmons has somehow always had a beat on what Mahomes is going to do. His interception on Sunday night was the sixth of his career against Mahomes, dating back to Simmons' time with the Denver Broncos. Despite all the individual success that Simmons has had against him, his teams have only beaten Mahomes once in 13 games.
Mahomes will always take the win over statistics, but it has to irk him a bit that Simmons has had his number. Simmons signed a one-year deal with the Falcons during the offseason, so it's currently unknown when he'll meet Mahomes again, unless the Chiefs and Falcons meet in the Super Bowl. As far as the Chiefs and Mahomes are concerned, hopefully Simmons stays in Atlanta for a while.
Chiefs DT Chris Jones had a right to be fired up after questionable roughing the passer call vs. Falcons
Kansas City Chiefs DT Chris Jones was pissed by the call and he absolutely had the right to be.
