The officials are all the talk once again after a very controversial no-call at the end of the Sunday Night Football game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Atlanta Falcons.
Late in the fourth quarter, the Falcons went for it on fourth down. And it was Kyle Pitts who ran into the end zone to try and help the Falcons get the lead. However, Chiefs safety Brian Cook stayed on the tight end, but his defense might have been a little too aggressive.
He wrapped his arms around Pitts as the ball was coming his way, making it nearly impossible for the tight end to catch it. And the result was a turnover on downs.
But many thought that this should have been a defensive pass interference call against the Chiefs, which would have given the Falcons a new set of downs.
After the game, head coach Raheem Morris was asked about this controversial moment.
“I like my money. I like my money that Arthur Blank gives me. I’m very smart enough to be aware enough to talk about officials. They made the call, or they didn't make the call," he told reporters. "It is what it is. We had a chance to win the football game on the last play of the game.”
But that first comment about liking his money said it all.
Yes, the team could have won it at different points throughout the game, but this call definitely effected the outcome. No one likes to see a game that's influenced by the referees.
And it's clear Morris agrees, but he wasn't going to actually say it. That fine would not make the loss any better.
The head coach was also asked about why the went for it on that fourth down rather than kicking the field goal.
“I was in four-down territory for a while there. We were going out there to win this football game. We didn't come here to tie," he said. "We didn't come here to lose. We didn't come here to hope we win. We didn't come here to allow Patrick Mahomes to work his magic. We came here to win the football game on our terms and I lost it, so I'll take that medicine all day.”
The Falcons will look to turn that page on this game as quickly as possible and get ready to face off against a strong New Orleans Saints squad next weekend.
