We all knew it was coming for Ja'Marr Chase, and it has arrived.

The NFL has fined Chase $31,599 for unsportsmanlike conduct during the Cincinnati Bengals' Week 2 loss against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Chase was tackled by cornerback Trent McDuffie and pleaded his case to head referee Alex Kemp that he was hip-drop tackled.

"He was questioning the tackle," Kemp told reporters after the game. "He thought he was hip-drop tackled on the previous play. And so, he came to me wondering about a hip-drop tackle. That was the beginning line of questioning."

When Chase didn't get the call he wanted, Kemp explained he used "abusive language" towards him, which prompted the 15-yard penalty.

“It’s pretty clear cut," Kemp said. "It’s just simply abusive language toward a game official. That’s all it was. And there was really no interpretation. I’m not going to repeat to you what he said.”

Chase declined to answer any questions about the incident after the game. Interestingly enough, he wasn't the only Bengals wideout to be fined this week. Andrei Iosivas was also hit with an unsportsmanlike conduct fine of $5,305 for his bow-and-arrow celebration.

Chase's infraction was one of many mistakes the Bengals made in the fourth quarter against the Chiefs, and this one was entirely self-inflicted. Quarterback Joe Burrow did what he could to restrain Chase from going too far, but Kemp made the decision to penalize him. It turned a 3rd & 7 into a 3rd & 22, and the Bengals eventually settled for a field goal. The Bengals failed to score on their next and final drive, and the Chiefs won with a game-winning field goal in the final seconds.

The Bengals enter Week 3 with an 0-2 record for the third consecutive season. They'll look to get their first win Monday night against the Washington Commanders.
