The 2025 NFL Draft feels far away, but we're only a few months away from being in full draft mode. A big part of the evaluation process includes watching the film to see who improves on the field.
AtoZ Sports college football and NFL Draft expert Ryan Roberts has done just that, naming two Alabama Crimson Tide members to his latest Week 3 risers piece. Both of them now have the chance to make the first round of next April's draft, which would continue to bolster the Tide's NFL pipeline.
Roberts included junior quarterback Jalen Milroe and junior EDGE rusher LT Overton. Let's take a look at what Roberts said about each, and evaluate whether he has realistic expectations for them.
Jalen Milroe NFL Draft Outlook
An athletic freak who dominates with deep passing prowess and rushing, Milroe was correctly described by Roberts as "a highly debated quarterback prospect." The NFL is all about winning against Cover 2 defenses right now, which includes mobile quarterbacks and deep passing.
However, passing deep immensely stresses offensive lines and has not been sustainable for any NFL offense over the past few years. Can Milroe win in the short game?
Roberts noted the same concerns I have, saying:
The biggest question that is going to center around Milroe is his consistency making the easy things easy, particularly the short game. That’s a conversation over ceiling versus floor, which is an interesting one. Despite that, Milroe has been a big name around the league and could very well play himself into round one come April. There are some mesmerized by his dynamic ability.
This is a spot-on analysis by Roberts. It's hard not to like Milroe because of his gifts and big play ability. His ceiling is immense, and worth the risk for certain teams that have their own alien within their division (hello, Miami and Las Vegas). But the risk is also severe in case Milroe doesn't improve.
I think Milroe makes the first round because of team optimism around what he can become. Putting him in a Shanahan-based offense would be like seeing what a good version of Trey Young would've been.
LT Overton NFL Draft Outlook
The bigger hot-take Roberts had was noting that Overton could find his way into the first round next spring. Overton, who had 48 tackles and one sack over two years at Texas A&M, already has 11 tackles and one sack this season. Here's what Roberts shared on the 6-5, 283-pounder:
In a lot of ways, his game is reminiscent of former Georgia standout Trayvon Walker. His refinement still needs to take a step forward but Overton is a freak. He has the look of a first round selection this April if the development continues.
This is a hot take, for sure. Overton is massive and uses his length well. He's a bit odd as an EDGE guy, and I think moving to a 3-4 end or 4-3 under tackle makes sense. While the lack of production until this year is a concern, teams do love former 5-stars who can move well.
My prediction, right now, is that Overton will land in the third round. That's traditionally where guys who need seasoning but strong skill sets land, and Overton will get chances because he has the size and movement ability to become a rotational player.
