Just when you think the outlook surrounding the Indianapolis Colts shaky secondary can't get worse, a travesty has occurred.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that second-year cornerback Juju Brents has suffered what potentially could be a season-ending knee injury.

The Colts are placing Juju Brents on the IR

This is a massive shock, with no mention of Brents dealing with a knee injury coming during the Colts ' post-game press conferences. The only injury shared at that time was that of a star defensive tackle, DeForest Buckner, who was dealing with a back injury

The Colts drafted Brents with the 44th pick in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He was only able to play in 10 games as a rookie due to battling multiple injuries. Now, the Indianapolis native who attended Warren Central High School's second NFL season potentially ends after just one game.

The Colts secondary was already thin and overall lackluster. But now they lose their best outside CB, with no reliable option to step up to the plate and replace his production. This likely moves second-year CB Jaylon Jones to the top outside CB spot and, at the moment, Dallis Flowers (who was a healthy scratch in Week 1) to the other starting spot. Flowers struggled mightily throughout training camp and the preseason. So him moving into a starting spot is very problematic for the Colts defense.

Due to the lack of depth on the roster, I think the Colts have to look outside of their building for Brents' replacement. While trading for a proven star would be welcomed by myself and fans, that's not typically the Colts' style. So, I think the most likely option would be for them to look to the free agency market to add a veteran CB, and there are multiple options who have experience starting in the NFL.

There simply won't be a quick fix to replace Brents, especially not being ahead of their Week 2 matchup against the Green Bay Packers, which will include a very talented Packers wide receiver room that would have been a handful for the Colts even with Brents. The Colts likely won't face Packers starting QB Jordan Love due to him suffering an injury in their season opener. If he in fact is ruled out the Colts secondary will have the task of facing Malik Willis who formerly was with their AFC South rival the Tennessee Titans. I suggest buckling up, Colts fans, because the team's secondary issues will likely only get worse from here. And now, maybe more than ever, the team is going to realize how major of a mistake they made not addressing their secondary this past offseason.

In their corresponding move the Colts announced they signed CB Chris Lammons off their practice squad to the active roster to take Brents place. The team elevated Lammons during Week 1, now he gets a more stable spot on their 53-man roster ahead of Week 2. The only positive I can come up with during this devasting injury is that sources have shared with me that the team is holding out hope Brents can return later in the season. But that will all depend on his surgery and recovery to follow.
