Sherrone Moore, the new head coach for the Michigan Wolverines following Jim Harbaugh's departure, had been coaching without an official contract signed here as the 2024 college football season began. However, as of this writing, Moore is no longer without a contract at Michigan.
Wednesday morning the Michigan athletic department and Sherrone Moore himself announced that a deal had been made, and that the two sides were excited for the future. This deal comes at an interesting time given that Moore and Michigan are fresh off a rough loss to the Texas Longhorns this past Saturday.
Moore's lack of a contract had been re-emphasized by certain fans and media who looked to overreact to one loss to a top five team in the nation, but the truth is that Michigan has an excellent head coach they believe in and just simply wanted to lock down his future.
Sherrone Moore shared his excitement on his new contract finally officially being signed on Wednesday, saying:
"Our University of Michigan administration led by President Santa Ono and Athletic Director Warde Manuel has been tremendous throughout this process and I am excited to have this full contract completed. Their support for our team is greatly appreciated and all three of us are aligned in our goals for this football program. We want the attention to be on the players that work so hard to represent this team and university at the highest level. All of my focus is and always will be centered on the mental, physical, and spiritual development of the young men that suit up to play for Michigan. Go Blue!"
Michigan President Santa Ono and Athletic Director Ward Manuel also shared words in a post from official Michigan social media accounts in saying:
"We are excited to announce that the full contract for University of Michigan Football Coach Sherrone Moore has been signed by all parties. He is a proven leader and has been a great ambassador during his seven-plus years representing Michigan. Our university and athletic department leadership is behind Coach Moore, his coaching staff, and the great student athletes that compete on the field and in the classroom. We are excited to see our team take the field this Saturday against Arkansas State."
The contract details have yet to be released in full, but those will likely be coming soon. For many wondering why it took "so long" for Michigan to sign a contract with Moore this is not atypical at all. Contract negotiations with new head coaches–especially at larger brand universities–can take quite some time. In many cases news of a hire can take place only to be followed by several months of detailed negotiations.
Hopefully the contract is friendly to the Michigan organization. While Moore has been well-respected and seems to have good systems in place to succeed, he is rather unproven truly leading a program as a head coach at the highest levels of college football. He's saying and doing all the right things so far. Let's just hope for Michigan fans' sake that the on-field results look a whole lot better than the 31-12 loss to Texas moving forward.
