Justin Fields’ importance to the Chicago Bears was on full display in the team’s 31-10 loss to the New York Jets.
Fields was ruled out before pregame warmups as he continues to deal with a separated left shoulder. The decision was ultimately made after head coach Matt Eberflus and general manager Ryan Pace conferred with Fields and the medical staff.
“We decided that it was the best decision [for] Justin and also for the Chicago Bears that he was inactive today,” Eberflus said after the loss.
As for why the Bears decided to sideline Fields, leading to back-up quarterback Trevor Siemian getting the starting nod, Eberflus stated that the move revolved around Fields’ ability, or lack thereof, to protect himself.
“He didn’t have the strength to protect himself in the game properly and to perform the way he wanted to perform,” Eberflus revealed to reporters.
During the week, Eberflus was optimistic about Fields’ chances to suit up, but Chicago made the right decision in the end.
It’s best not to rush Fields back while navigating around a shoulder injury, especially with nothing left to play for outside of positioning themselves for the 2023 NFL Draft.
