Adam Schefter for ESPN reported at 3:57 p.m. ET that the Bills traded for running back Nyheim Hines from the Indianapolis Colts. In return, Buffalo will send a conditional fifth-round draft pick and running back Zack Moss, whose snap count has decreased to 15% of the offensive snaps this year.
General manager Brandon Beane gets it both ways. He gets a running back to complement Devin Singletary and a running game that has yet to find its stride and he avoids overpaying for one (like he would've in the Christian McCaffrey sweepstakes).
The Bills were involved in the C-Mac conversation and also were reportedly involved in the pursuits of Alvin Kamara. However, both would've been quite expensive from a draft pick compensation perspective which doesn't fit with Beane's way of doing things.
Which is perfectly fine, by the way. Especially for a team that's built to be a contender for the next decade with Josh Allen at quarterback like the Bills.
Not to mention the cap hit players like them involve. Kamara, for instance, will cost $9M in 2023 and $10M in 2024. McCaffrey's number is at 11 for each of the next two seasons.
Compare that to Hines' who's at $4M and $5M.
Keep in mind what the Bills were looking for was a legit rushing option that could also get involved in the passing game. The former 2018 fourth-round draft pick fits that profile. Over the last four seasons, he's averaged 72 targets per year.
While Hines doesn't have the biggest of names, the Bills get one of the best values in the market right before the trade window closes.
