In a week where the rivalry between the Philadelphia Eagles (13-1) and Dallas Cowboys (10-4) should take center stage, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has been the topic of conversation.
Hurts suffered a shoulder sprain in Sunday’s win over the Chicago Bears, putting his status for Saturday's game in question.
On Tuesday, Hurts addressed the media, providing an update on his shoulder.
“I’m feeling fine,” Hurts said. “We’re keeping everything business as usual. We’re playing a really good team, a really good opponent. We’re doing everything we can on a short week to be at full health.”
While it’s not believed to be an injury that will affect Hurts in the long term, the timing of the issue is concerning. However, Hurts' toughness is well-documented and he’s not ready to rule out the possibility of suiting up against the Cowboys.
“Definitely a chance, taking it day by day, though,” Hurts stated regarding his chances to play. “I’m taking everything one day at a time with it and preparing versus a really good defense.”
Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni commended Hurts’ toughness on Tuesday.
“I don’t put anything past Jalen Hurts as far as his mental and physical toughness. There’s a chance he could play this week.”
Whether Sirianni is just giving the Cowboys something to think about during their week of preparation, or if he actually believes Hurts can give it a go remains to be seen. Either way, it’s wise to leave the door open for a possible return.
The Bigger Picture
The Eagles’ magic number to clinch the top seed in the NFC is down to one. The team needs to win just one of its three remaining games, or receive help in order to lock up an opening round bye week in the playoffs.
It’s fantastic that Hurts refuses to count himself out this week, but the bigger picture is more important. Philadelphia shouldn’t risk any further damage to Hurts’ throwing shoulder by allowing him to suit up on Saturday, as the risk far outweighs the reward.
