All-Pro center Jason Kelce is fanning the flames in one of the NFL’s most heated rivalries between the Dallas Cowboys and his Philadelphia Eagles.
The undefeated Eagles (5-0) square off with the surging Dallas Cowboys (4-1) in front of the football world this week. The two teams will battle it out for the NFC East lead on Sunday Night Football.
While the fight for first place doesn’t begin for a few days, Kelce has ignited a war of words between the two fanbases. When asked about the difference between the two groups, Kelce pulled no punches in his response.
“You have the Philadelphia fanbase, which is this extremely localized diehard fanbase that’s authentic to all of them growing up together in this community and this environment that breeds authenticity,” stated Kelce on Thursday’s 94WIP Morning Show.
“And you have the Cowboys fanbase, which they have that in Dallas, but the majority of that fanbase is built on commercialism and all of this pop culture, Lakers, Yankees type fandom that I think is the complete opposite of what the Philadelphia Eagles fanbase stands for.”
Kelce’s full statement can be found below.
What Kelce said is spot on. Philly fans are built differently. When the Eagles are playing good football, there is no fanbase in the NFL that can hold a candle to their passion.
Interestingly enough, Kelce's comments come after former Eagles LT Jason Peters referred to Eagles fans as nasty on Wednesday.
While the Cowboys are more of a national presence, their fanbase is typically only making noise when the team is winning. Cowboys nation tends to go silent once the team begins on its annual downward spiral.
Down in Dallas some might refer to Kelce’s quote as bulletin board material, but up in Philly his words are nothing short of the cold hard truth.
