Even if they want to stay away from it, the Dallas Cowboys are going to be mentioned in trade markets. Through three weeks, it seems like others already have November 2nd on the mind.

The NFL Trade Deadline.

While the Cowboys themselves haven't dipped their toes in the market before the deadline since acquiring DL Michael Bennett back in 2019, they are known to make moves to gain more draft capital. Their primary source of team building.

This time, they're being talked about in the quarterback trade market. No, not for franchise QB Dak Prescott.

Where did this start? Stephen Jones was on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas, TX. He spoke of the team's success at offensive line, defensive line and even play-makers. Eventually, their (current) starting QB Cooper Rush was brought up.

In truth, you can never have too many good players. Especially at key positions like QB, or edge rusher and offensive tackle.

Rush has filled in for Prescott while he deals with his recovery from his broken thumb. The Dallas Cowboys QB2 is 2-0 as a starter this season, completing 63% of his passes for 514 yards and two touchdowns.

While he isn't a world-beater, Rush wouldn't be the first QB who has taken the offensive scheme and excelled in his brief time.

In recent memory, the same has happened for players like Teddy Bridgewater, Ryan Tannehill and Jameis Winston. Could Rush be next?

Rush's market likely isn't in the same ballpark as Matthew Stafford or Russell Wilson, each of whom received multiple first round picks (and then some) for a change of scenery.

However, there are other QB's who've been on the move that could net similar compensation:

  1. Carson Wentz: second and third round picks, plus a conditional third.
  2. Baker Mayfield: conditional fifth-round pick.
  3. Sam Darnold: second, fourth and sixth round picks.
  4. Matt Ryan: third-round pick.

Rush will be 29 this November, but is undefeated in his career as a starter. He also only counts $845,000 against the cap and will be an unrestricted free agent in March. A lot to factor.

Players like Kurt Warner, Matt Schaub, Josh McCown (2013) and Jeff Garcia all found success as a starter later in their careers. It's possible the Dallas Cowboys may want to gain more draft capital once Dak returns, giving Rush his first chance to be a full-time starter.

For the time being, Rush will stay the Cowboys starting QB. Whenever Dak is back at the helm, don't be surprised when the reports come out of trade calls coming in.

Whatever the compensation could be, they may consider.
