The Titans have one of the best safety duos in the entire NFL. Considering age, it may just be the best with Kevin Byard and Amani Hooker. Byard is arguably the best safety in the league, and Hooker has developed into a great second piece at the position. Pro Football Focus puts Byard on a special pedestal among safeties.
A league of their own
Byard and Antoine Winfield Jr. of the Buccaneers are the only two with this distinction. The grade shows that both players have an extremely balanced game. Many safeties blossom in single-high coverage or can make tackles in the run game. Few do both at an elite level. Byard is a part of that impressive group.
Titans fans know his game well. He had undoubtedly the best season of any safety in 2021. With the youth in the Titans' secondary's his role is even more massive for the defense. The task was not too big for him, and there is no reason to believe it will be going forward.
2021 was the fourth season for Byard with 4+ interceptions for the Titans. Those type of numbers don't happen too often at the safety position. The consistency is special. It was also the fifth year in a row where Byard had at least 84 tackles. He's never been afraid to attack in the run, but it doesn't cost him in coverage very often.
The Titans will need another elite season from Byard this year if they want to contend in a very tough AFC. They have all of the belief in the world in him, though.
