Most Tennessee Titans fans were hopeful that the team would make some moves to fill holes at the NFL trade deadline. As the deadline came and went in 2022 with Tennessee failing to make any deals, the fanbase quickly grew frustrated with the front office.
With a clear hole at left tackle and help needed in the wide receiving corps, GM Jon Robinson and the Titans did not convert on a trade. But it may not have been for lack of trying.
In a recent interview with Broadway Sports Media, Denver Broncos insider Benjamin Allbright alleged that the Titans contacted Denver ahead of the deadline and considered making a move to acquire wide receiver Jerry Jeudy or outside linebacker Bradley Chubb.
"It was a second-rounder and then another mid-round pick, and nobody even came close to offering that," Allbright said about the Broncos asking price for WR Jerry Jeudy. "The Titans did make a phone call, I do know that. In fact, the Titans even called about Bradley Chubb too," Allbright said.
The Broncos ended up sending Chubb to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a 2023 first-round pick, a 2024 fourth-round pick, and running back Chase Edmonds. A price the Titans never could have realistically afforded.
Jeudy, on the other hand, was not traded at the deadline. With no team meeting the asking price of a second-round pick and one mid-round pick, the Broncos decided to keep their offensive core together and hold on to him.
If Allbright's information on the asking price for Jeudy is accurate, I think the Titans may have dropped the ball with this one.
I've never loved the idea of trading a first-round pick to improve at wide receiver this season after using a first-rounder to draft Treylon Burks in 2022. The Titans will have other needs to fill, namely the offensive line, and they will need high-end draft capital to do so.
That said, a second-round pick and a future mid-round pick seems more than reasonable for a player like Jeudy. He's young and promising, in the third year of a rookie contract that has a fifth year option, and has the versatility to line up anywhere. Jeudy was one of the only trade options available that would not have posed an issue for the Titans against the cap as well.
"Considering" a trade does no good. The Titans needed to get something done, and they may look back on that opportunity and regret it.
