The Carolina Panthers (1-4) fired head coach Matt Rhule on Monday, raising speculation about the availability of some of the team’s key players.
As the Panthers shift towards a rebuild, players like RB Christian McCaffrey, WR D.J. Moore, WR Robbie Anderson, and DE Brian Burns are being labeled as potential trade pieces.
For the Tennessee Titans, there is no secret that the team could use an upgrade at the wide receiver position, especially with rookie Treylon Burks recently landing on injured reserve.
ESPN analyst Dan Orlvosky took to the airwaves on Monday, suggesting that the Titans should inquire about Moore's status.
“[For] D.J. Moore, if I was Green Bay, I’d call Carolina. If I was Dallas, I’d call Carolina. And if I was Tennessee, I’d call Carolina.”
Moore has put together three straight seasons with over 1,000 receiving yards in Carolina. Though he absolutely has the tools to make an impact in Tennessee, his contract situation makes the move more complicated.
Moore’s cap hit is just $6.1 million in 2022, playing on the final year of his rookie deal. However, that number jumps to $25 million next season, and $20.9 million against the cap in 2024 and 2025, per Spotrac.
While the player makes sense for the Titans, the contract might not. If the Titans weren’t willing to dish out $25 million per year to A.J. Brown, I have hard time believing GM Jon Robinson will make room for Moore in the middle of the season.
