That's one hell of a rookie campaign and it put Chase's name near the top of the list when it comes to the best receivers in the NFL. The annual NFL Top 100 list is currently being revealed, and it was intriguing to see where Chase would land after setting the league on fire last season. The Bengals' top receiver came in at No. 23 in the rankings.
Coral Smith on Chase:
"Quite simply, in 2021, Chase was one of the best rookie wide receivers in history. His first year was a revelation, a No. 5 overall pick well spent by Cincinnati. In addition to playing a big role in the Bengals' run to the Super Bowl, Chase broke multiple records, including Cincy's marks for most receiving yards in a game (266) and most receiving yards in a season (1,455). He also smashed the NFL’s rookie receiver records, collecting the most receiving yards by a rookie in a game, in a postseason (368), and in a season overall. His 1,455 receiving yards were also fourth in the league amongst all players. Needless to say, Chase was awarded with a Pro Bowl nod and AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors at season’s end. What else could you do when he’s playing at the level of some of the best veterans in his first year as a pro?"
This is a list voted on by the players, and although where certain players are ranked can be debated, they were correct about where they placed Chase. He set the rookie record for receiving yards during the Super Bowl era (1,455), the most receiving yards in a game by a rookie (266, also Bengals' team record), and the most receiving yards in the postseason by a rookie (368).
Chase hauled in 13 touchdowns last season for the Bengals as well, the second-most by a rookie in NFL history (Randy Moss, 17). What makes Chase's season more impressive is that he finished fourth in receiving yards while being just 18th in targets.
One of the league's top safeties, Tyrann Mathieu of the New Orleans Saints, gave Chase plenty of praise recently.
"He's, like, Odell Beckham 2.0," Mathieu said. "We always appreciate the guys like Odell, and Julio Jones, and Jerry Rice. These guys that can catch a slant and take it 80 yards, and he's one of them."
Chase is already this good after one season. If his trajectory continues, defensive backs and defensive coordinators around the NFL will be hearing the A Nightmare on Elm Street theme every time they have to gameplan for him and the Bengals' offense for quite some time.
