The Tennessee Vols are hoping to steal an elite 2023 four-star defensive back from LSU's backyard.
Tennessee is one of several teams in the mix to land cornerback Jordan Matthews.
Matthews, 6-foot-2/175 lbs from Baton Rouge, LA, is ranked in 247Sports' composite rankings as the No. 16 cornerback in the country and the No. 10 player in the state of Louisiana.
LSU, Michigan, Texas, and Texas A&M are some of the other programs working to land Matthews.
The Vols, however, appeared to make quite an impression on the talented cornerback during his visit this past weekend.
Matthews told VolQuest after the visit that he's "heavily considering" Tennessee.
"I felt like there was a real homey vibe here (at Tennessee). I feel like I could play here one day," said Matthews. “Tennessee is definitely up there. They got one of my visits so I’m heavily considering Tennessee."
Matthews noted that he'd prefer to make his decision before the start of his senior season, though that's not written in stone.
This is certainly a player the Volunteers need. Matthews has ideal size for a cornerback and he has plenty of speed (he also runs track in high school and recently placed second in Louisiana's 5A 200-meter final).
Stealing a player from LSU would be an added bonus (Tigers head coach Brian Kelly doesn't seem to be doing a great job with in-state recruits). But regardless of where Matthews is from, he's a player that can help take Tennessee's defense to an elite level.
The Vols currently have 12 players committed to their 2023 recruiting class, which is ranked No. 13 in the nation.
