One of the main 2023 recruits that the Tennessee Vols are trying to land is five-star wide receiver Carnell Tate.

Tate, 6-foot-2/185 lbs from Bradenton, FL (by way of Chicago), is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 2 wide receiver in the nation and the No. 4 player in the state of Florida. He's also ranked as the No. 14 overall player in the 2023 recruiting class.

The Vols are viewed as one of the favorites to land Tate, along with Ohio State and Notre Dame.

Tennessee could be considered the current frontrunner for Tate, thanks to his recent visit that went extremely well. Plus there's the Nico Iamaleava effect. Iamaleava, the five-star quarterback who committed to the Vols in March, is pushing hard for Tate to commit to Tennessee.

A surprise team in the mix to land Carnell Tate?

When Tate revealed his top five schools last month, he included Alabama and Georgia, along with Tennessee, Ohio State, and Notre Dame.

It's one of the programs that's not in Tate's top five, however, that could be a sneaky threat to land the talented wide receiver.

LSU is emerging as a serious contender to land Tate, thanks to the growing possibility that the Tigers could secure a commitment from five-star quarterback Dante Moore (new LSU head coach Brian Kelly was recruiting both players when he was at Notre Dame).

Tate took his first visit to LSU this weekend and Moore was in town as well.

The fact that Kelly has a relationship with Tate from his time at Notre Dame is why some recruiting analysts feel like the Tigers have a legitimate shot to win this recruiting battle.

"Playing together could be a serious consideration and while Ohio State, Tennessee and Notre Dame look best for Tate, things could get interesting if the five-star receiver really likes it in Baton Rouge," wrote Rivals national recruiting director Adam Gorney this week.

College football recruiting is fluid. Things can change hourly when it comes to which program a recruit prefers.

If the visit went well at LSU this weekend with Tate — and it appears that it did — the Tigers could be a serious threat to Tennessee (and Notre Dame and Ohio State).

The Vols are in a good spot for Tate, but this recruitng battle is going to be intense until Tate puts pen to paper later this year.
