Tennessee Vols wide receiver Jalin Hyatt became a household name among college football fans this past weekend thanks to his insane performance in UT's 52-49 win against Alabama.
Hyatt, a former four-star recruit, caught six passes for 207 yards and five touchdowns in the thrilling win.
The Vols' win against Alabama was obviously a complete team effort. But I think it's safe to say that Tennessee doesn't win that game without Hyatt on the field.
So just how impressive and rare was Hyatt's memorable five-touchdown day?
According to stats shared by SEC Network's Cole Cubelic, Hyatt joined some elite wide receivers with his big day.
Torry Holt, a seven-time Pro-Bowler and College Football Hall of Fame member, and DeVonta Smith, the No. 10 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft, are pretty good names to be mentioned with (Smith's five-touchdown day came against Ole Miss in 2019, by the way).
Joining Holt and Smith in the record books, and becoming the first wide receiver to score five touchdowns against Nick Saban (at any of his stops), puts Hyatt in the "special" category of wide receivers.
It was always well-known that Hyatt had the ability to be an elite player. And now he's putting it all together and becoming a superstar in front of the nation's eyes.
Tennessee still has some work to do to reclaim the moniker of "wide receiver U", but Hyatt is doing his best to expedite the process.
