While the Denver Broncos offense was struggling, again, the defense was still doing their part, as usual.
The whole 2022 season has been weird for the Broncos. We heard during training camp about the dominance of the defense and the struggles of the offense. However, no one really made much of it.
We thought, hey, the Broncos offense is just playing one of the best defenses every day in practice. Unfortunately, those struggles have carried over into the season as well.
The offense struggled against the Seattle Seahawks, while the defense held the team to 17 points. However, it is the Seahawks who aren't very good.
Then, the offense struggled against the Houston Texans, one of the worst in the league. The defense was still solid, as they held the Texans to nine points.
The defense was huge for the Broncos after they allowed that first score. They didn't allow much offense after that, and actually never allowed a first down conversion. The main bright spot for the Broncos defense was Patrick Surtain, who tied a season record.
According to NFL Next Gen Stats on Twitter, Surtain II did not allow a reception on five targets in the first half, which is tied for the most targets without a reception in a game this season. The kicker is, that was at halftime.
Next Gen Stats also reported that Jimmy Garoppolo completed 11 of his 12 passes targeting other defenders.
We know Surtain is one of the best young cornerbacks in the league. Now, he is showing the rest of the league on primetime football that he is one of the best.
Broncos fans should be happy with how their young stud is playing, and the trajectory he is on. It's safe to say, the Broncos' defense is in safe hands for the next few years.
