The Buffalo Bills knew very well they had to take care of an important item on their to-do list before they kick off the NFL season versus the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday.
They did just that on Wednesday by extending tight end Dawson Nox through the 2026 season, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Knox will not end up as a top-five tight end in annual value per year as early reports stated, though. In fact, he'll be just below David Njoku's number. Knox will earn $13.4 million per year on a deal with $31M in guarantees.
Knox has emerged as one of the top tight ends in the NFL. Last year, he was one of Josh Allen's top red zone targets. Of his nine touchdowns, eight happened inside the opponent's 20-yard line.
Overall, Knox finished fourth on the Bills in targets and had 587 yards averaging 12 yards per reception. However, Knox's ranks around the NFL since entering the league are not among the best. In fact, he ranks 20th in the league in receptions and 26th in target share among tight ends since 2019.
This deal is about what's ahead of him in Ken Dorsey's offense. In an offense loaded with talent at wide receiver, the Bills prioritize 11 personnel while being one of only two teams that ran 12 personnel (two tight ends) in less than 10% of the offensive snaps.
As such, Brandon Beane and company knew they needed the right guy for the job. Knox is exactly that.
Keeping Knox for the next few years ensures the Bills' Super Bowl window remains open beyond a year in which expectations are at their highest. With Diggs signed through 2027 and Knox through 2026, this offense will have key playmakers for the long run.
Not to mention, they also added Von Miller on the other side of the ball and locked him up with a long-term deal. The Bills have something special beyond 2022.
