Buffalo Bills were interested in making a significant splash move before the regular season, but it just blew up in their face
The Buffalo Bills were brought up as a top landing spot for a disgruntled NFL Pro Bowler, but the idea of that happening just blew up thanks to a big payday.
The Buffalo Bills entered the 2026 offseason as a legitimate Super Bowl contender, and teams at the top of the NFL often find themselves linked to splash moves that could put them over the top.
That’s been the case lately with Buffalo, which has been a team showing interest in acquiring Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Vita Vea, per NFL Network’s Mike Garafalo.
The veteran defensive tackle was in the final year of the 4-year, $71 million extension he signed with the Buccaneers back in 2022 and was seeking more money from Tampa Bay or a trade elsewhere.
Vea would have been a huge addition for the Bills if they were able to make it happen. He’s one of the most proven defensive tackles in the NFL with 35 sacks and 250 tackles over the last eight years. Vea has recorded at least four sacks in every season since 2021, earning two Pro Bowl selections in that span. The 347-pound run stopper would have been a plug-and-play player for the middle of Buffalo’s defense.
Vita Vea cashes in with Tampa Bay
That possibility is now off the table. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Buccaneers and Vea have agreed to a 1-year, $30 million extension that will tie him to Tampa Bay for 2 more seasons, and it gives him $6 million in new money this season.
The deal keeps Vita Vea locked in with the Buccaneers through the 2027 season.
The idea of adding Vea was a fun one for Buffalo that could have potentially pushed them atop the AFC if they weren’t already. The disgruntled Pro Bowler just cashed in and is off the market for general manager Brandon Beane to pursue.
Buffalo will roll into the season with Ed Oliver, Greg Gaines, Dwayne Carter, and rookie Zane Durant as the interior of their defensive line. It’s a solid group, but Vea’s combination of pass-rushing production and run-stuffing ability would have elevated that unit to another level.
Time will tell if Beane explores other avenues to bolster the defensive interior before the regular season begins.
