Buffalo Bills cut three-time Super Bowl champion and hand key job to late round rookie at the same time
The Bills made a couple of big roster cuts to start off Saturday morning.
The Buffalo Bills, along with a good chunk of the rest of the NFL, have started the roster cuts process and former Super Bowl champion Mecole Hardman Jr. is the latest guy to get the bad news.
Just a few minutes before that, the Bills cut veteran punter Mitch Wishnowsky, paving way for seventh-round rookie Tommy Dolan to take the job.
Hardman Jr. was hoping to avoid Bills roster cuts and hop on with the team after joining it in late 2025. Per reports, he wasn’t really making any strides in camp and wasn’t showing much pop in the return game, either. The latter has typically been his strength over the course of his seven-year career that includes three Super Bowl titles with the Kansas City Chiefs.
“The top five are pretty secure, so it comes down to whether the Bills would keep a sixth,” The Athletic’s Joe Buscaglia recently wrote. “With all five locks trending well health-wise toward Week 1, keeping another could be less pressing. Mecole Hardman and Trent Sherfield were both considered, but Hardman’s main draw is as the punt returner. Despite Davis muffing a punt on Thursday, the Bills at least have some safer backup options in-house in Dee Alford and Shakir.”
Although he did catch the game-winning touchdown in the Chiefs’ Super Bowl LVIII win over the San Francisco 49ers.
Regardless, there’s definitely a chance he ends up on the Bills’ practice squad, but that remains to be seen.
Wishnowsky, on the other hand, likely won’t make the Bills’ practice squad. Dolan had definitely outperformed him in camp and teams typically don’t carry specialists on the practice squad.
There are plenty more Bills roster cuts to come, but these two are definitely two of the bigger moves the team will make throughout the weekend as the league approaches the 6 p.m. ET deadline on Sunday, August 30.
