Where do you even begin with a game like that? The Buffalo Bills beat the Miami Dolphins 32-29 in what will go down in the books as one of the best games of the 2022 NFL season. The caliber of play lived up to the weather-induced hype surrounding the AFC East clash.
Both the Bills and the Dolphins moved the ball efficiently.
For the Bills, it was mostly about Josh Allen doing Josh Allen-type things like -for example- scrambling to the right as the game clock hit zero before halftime before tossing James Cook a touchdown while we all internally begged for him to throw the ball so there would be time to kick a field goal.
Of course, any good magician needs an assistant. But Allen, an MVP-caliber illusionist, needs multiple. His teammates delivered. Dawson Knox recorded 98 receiving yards, many of which came after the catch. Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis each racked up over 50 receiving yards. Cook and Devin Singletary came up big during key downs.
Meanwhile, for the Dolphins, it was more about dominating the line of scrimmage. Running back Raheem Mostert totaled 136 yards on 17 carries. As a team, the Dolphins out-physicalled the Bills defense while averaging 7.5 yards per rush attempt.
So, what made the difference in the ballgame?
Situational football.
Is that oversimplification? Maybe. But that's what football is all about.
The Bills were uber-efficient on third down, moving the chains on 8-of-13 third down attempts (62%) while the Dolphins were held to a meager 5-of-14 (36%) mark.
In the red zone, the Bills were 4-of-4 (without counting the game-winning field goal drive) while the Dolphins went 1-of-3. That doesn't even include Allen's Herculean two-point conversion to tie the ballgame. Considering they entered Week 15 ranked #13 in red zone scoring, this was an encouraging step in the right direction.
When it mattered most, the Bills offense showed up undeterred by the snow as it closed out the first half with three consecutive touchdowns, all of them from Josh Allen's passes. In doing so, they proved they're built for the Super Bowl.
To close out the second half, the Bills followed up a touchdown drive with a 15-play, six-minute sequence that culminated in Tyler Bass' teammates playing Plow King as they tried to clean up the field for his game-winning attempt.
Bass rewarded the coaching staff's trust by nailing the kick. Next thing you know, they're doing snow angels on the field.
This night was special. Not because the Bills clinched a playoff berth -that was not only expected but demanded- but because they resemble the Super Bowl-favorite team the Mafia expected them to be.
The Bills remain the team to beat in the AFC.
