Eagles defender better be ready to back up bold statement on Sunday

The Philadelphia Eagles have shown that they can ball with anyone. Their offense has shown that they can score with anyone, and the defense has shown that they can stop anyone.
Well, outside the second-half Lions, of course.
We have talked relentlessly about how the Eagles are so well-rounded and have some of the best players in football. We know about the offensive line, and how it is viewed as the best in football. We know about the receivers and now Jalen Hurts getting the recognition he deserves.
Now, the defense needs some. They have an elite unit that trots out onto the field every week, and it has gone unnoticed. And, it isn't just the pass rush, who had nine sacks last week. It's the secondary, too.
Eagles' players think they are the best, as do all NFL players. They think that the secondary on this team is the best in football so far, and why shouldn't they?
If you ask new defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson, he will tell you the same thing.
"I'm a professional, not to be disrespectful or anything," Gardner-Johnson replied when asked how he has learned the defense so quickly. "They brought me here to do certain things, so I'm here to have fun. Call the defense, call the shots, it's a whole new position for me.
"I think I'm filling in well, I think the guys brought me in well, helping me learn – coaches, coaching staff, teammates. When you are a professional you just dive into what you need to focus on. You have seen the past three games. We have the best back end [secondary] in football right now."
He isn't completely wrong. While I wouldn't say they have the best secondary in football right now, they are definitely up there, with room to grow, too. They have the potential to be the best, for sure.
That is not saying they are bad, though, because they definitely aren't. They just aren't the best. They have shown that they can be the best. Just look at Week 2 Monday Night Football.
A lot of people consider Justin Jefferson a top-three receiver in football right now, and rightfully so. He is very good. However, he was everything but that when they played in Week 2. In large part because of the secondary.
According to Pro Football Focus, the Eagles have the third-highest coverage defense in the league, with a grade of 79.6. Only the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and San Francisco 49ers are better.
The Eagles did give up 100 receiving yards to Terry McLaurin last week, which is something that has to be better, even if the defense did sack Wentz nine times.
This week, they can prove they are the best by shutting down the Jacksonville Jaguars' pass game.
It may sound weird to say this, but the Jaguars have had a ton of success so far through the air. Christian Kirk has lived up to the contract so far and is their best receiver so far this year.
If the Eagles can shut down that passing game, I think they will be one step closer to being recognized as the league's best secondary.
