The Denver Broncos recently waived cornerback Essang Bassey to make room for Darius Phillips.

Phillips started the offseason with the Las Vegas Raiders, who signed him to a one-year deal worth $1.5 million in March, so it came as a surprise when he didn't make the team on Tuesday, the roster cut-down day.

Phillips has spent his four NFL seasons on the Cincinnati Bengals and had some pretty good seasons.

Last season he didn't play much. However, in 2020, he had a great season.

In 2020, he started eight of 12 games and put up some pretty good numbers for the time he played. He finished with one interception, 12 pass deflections, and 38 total tackles.

Phillips won't start for the Broncos, barring any injuries of course, but if he ever needed to, the Broncos would be fine.

This is purely a move to help experience and depth at the position. The Broncos are trying to do everything they can to have one of the better defensive back units in the league.
