The Kansas City Chiefs went from having one of the NFL's more underwhelming offensive lines to having one of the best within a few months.
After the Super Bowl loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, they added four new starters by the time the NFL Draft ended in April. All four starters went on to have strong seasons in 2021 and it looks like much of the same will happen in 2022.
It all started with the signing of former Patriot guard Joe Thuney. The Chiefs wanted/needed Thuney so badly (and he's that good), they made him the highest-paid guard in the league before Brandon Scherff surpassed him this offseason.
Thuney is arguably the best offensive lineman on the team. And the folks over at ESPN have taken notice.
NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler has been putting together top-10 lists constructed through the picks of NFL executives, coaches, and players and he recently released his rankings for interior offensive linemen.
Sure enough, Thuney landed at No. 4 on the list. Below is an excerpt of what Fowler had to say in regard to the former second-team All-Pro:
"… Thuney's 96.6% pass block win rate led all offensive guards, and he offers Kansas City positional flexibility as a guard and center. His 71.3% run block win rate was also 16th among guards, showing his impact in multiple areas.
"What makes Thuney great, per an NFC executive: "Great technique, awareness, uses his intelligence to stay in control of the game. He's just really dependable."
Thuney has certainly established himself among the NFL's elite guards
Per Pro Football Focus, Thuney graded out as the eighth-best guard (81.2) among all guards with at least 623 blocking snaps in 2021. He allowed the seventh-fewest total pressures (17) and he was just one of five players to allow three or less combined sacks/quarterback hits.
Thuney's pass blocking efficiency rate of 99.0 led all 64 qualifying guards, as well.
Run blocking is where Thuney's elite play takes a bit of a dip, however. But, he's still ranked in the top-20 in regard to PFF's run blocking grades. And, we're talking about the Chiefs offense, here. Let's not pretend the passing game isn't priority No. 1, to begin with, anyway.
While Thuney and the rest of the Chiefs offensive line has been very good, the Chiefs -and their fans- should be even more excited entering 2022 when considering the fact that these guys are all entering Year 2 together, which means they should be even better this year.
