Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin made one of the most head-scratching comments of the year on Sunday night after his team lost 16-10 to the Miami Dolphins.

The Steelers offense has been awful this season. And it doesn't appear to be getting any better after putting up just 10 points against the Dolphins.

Pittsburgh's lack of splash plays has been especially alarming (and a topic of discussion in the locker room). The Steelers essentially don't have an offensive identity.

And it seems like most folks — even ex-Pittsburgh players — agree.

Tomlin, however, appears to be living in a different world.

The longtime Steelers head coach was asked after the game if the offense is getting close to forming an identity.

"I feel like we are," said Tomlin after another lackluster offensive performance by the Pittsburgh offense. "We didn't make the necessary splash plays today to secure victory. But I certainly feel like we are. Certainly."

I don't know what Tomlin is watching, but the offense doesn't look any better in week 7 than it did in week five when the Steelers scored only three points against the Buffalo Bills or in week two when they scored just 14 points in a loss to the New England Patriots.

The only way this comment from Tomlin makes sense is if he's happy with the offensive approach that Pittsburgh is taking — which apparently doesn't include throwing the ball down the field.

Answers like that have to infuriate Steelers fans. This team isn't getting better. The offense, if anything, is getting more predictable. And there's little hope with this kind of attitude from the head coach that anything is going to change moving forward.

Tomlin should be furious at the playcalling. And maybe behind closed doors, he is. But the message he's sending to fans right now is that they should feel good about what they're seeing on the field.

Well, I don't know about you, but there wasn't much good I saw from the Steelers' offense on Sunday night. It was hard to watch and it feels like this team is nowhere close to getting over the hump.

The 2022 season is looking like a bust for Pittsburgh unless something changes fast. Really fast.
