Madden ’23 has been the focal point of online debates on Monday as it released player ratings for wide receivers and tight ends. While EA Sports refuses to do anything to modify the actual video game for the better, Madden’s player ratings always stir up strong reactions in the football world.
Only the top 23 wide receivers and top 15 tight ends have been released so far, but Titans fans don’t have to look far to find representation.
Robert Woods checks in at 86 overall rounding out the game’s top-rated wideouts. Woods is tied with Calvin Ridley and Mike Williams, but there is one player listed above him that will certainly pique the interest of Titans fans.
That player is A.J. Brown.
Brown is slotted at an 87 overall rating, which is admittedly a big surprise. I thought he had a shot to sniff 90, but the game’s creators had a different idea.
Guys like Tyler Lockett, Chris Godwin, D.K. Metcalf, and Adam Thielen are all ranked ahead of Brown, which will result in more than a few ALL CAPS social media posts from the Eagles’ online community.
Woods is just one point below Brown and could end up surpassing him during the season as the game is quick to update throughout the course of the regular season.
There were no rookie pass catchers in Monday’s reveal, meaning that Titans fans will have to wait and see where Treylon Burks lands.
It’s important to note that these ratings are never totally accurate, and that is something Madden creators do on purpose. In order to get free promotion, Madden typically snubs a couple of big name talents to cultivate online chatter.
This year’s example is Ja’Marr Chase at 87 overall. Chase has already expressed his discontent on Twitter, but plans to use it as fuel for the 2022 season.
At the end of the day these ratings aren’t scripture, it’s just a video game. I appreciate it because it is going to help distract me for the next week as I wait on teams to report to training camp, but that’s all it is – a distraction.
