Former Tennessee Titans and St. Louis Rams wide receiver Drew Bennett joined the Titan Up Podcast this week to discuss the challenges other teams will face up against this new-look Titans offense.
Bennett, a reoccurring guest on the podcast – located on the A to Z Sports Podcast Network and hosted by Austin Huff and Jack Gentry, applauded the options that the recent acquisition Julio Jones gives the Titans. He explained why defenses will be forced to pick their poison against Tennessee’s three-headed monster in Derrick Henry, A.J. Brown and the aforementioned Jones.
There has only been one time in Titans history when the team had two wide receivers who each recorded over 1,000 yards receiving. Bennett was half of that duo in 2004, along with Derrick Mason.
This long passage of time has frustrated many Titans fans who enjoy a high-powered offense. However, time heals all wounds and these fans hope that Julio Jones solves all problems. At least, on the offensive side of the ball. The benchmark that Bennett and Mason set in 2004 is now the expectation for the Titans’ new tandem in Jones and A.J. Brown, along with Henry’s assistance on the ground.
Bennett explained how NFL teams will gameplan against this potent trio that the Titans will be lining up together on Sundays.
“Each defensive coordinator is going to pick one receiver,” Bennett said on this week’s Titan Up Podcast. “They’re going to say, ‘Okay, we are going to take our best corner, we’re going to put him on A.J. Brown.”
In describing a possible defensive strategy, he said, “What we are going to do is try to lock A.J. Brown up with one guy, take Julio Jones completely out of the game, and really tease Tannehill.”
While that is clearly easier said than done, those are tactics that many teams will attempt to use to slow down one of the NFL’s best duos at the wide receiver position. But, if defenses spend too much energy on the Titans’ pass catchers, they will be exposed to Henry who is coming off the eighth 2,000-yard season in NFL history.
“If you have eight guys in the box against those two receivers, you are in a lot of trouble,” Bennett added.
Bennett said he remains a fan of the team and is confident of what the Titans offense is capable of in 2021. When asked whether or not he’s worried about his touchdown receptions in a season (14), or his single-game receptions (13) records will be broken, he chuckled before replying.
“I’m all about guys breaking records, seeing more amazing things happen in football, seeing quarterbacks pass for 400 yards. I want the Titans to do great. I want to see Julio Jones really shine and play well.”
