According to data compiled by CBS Sports, the Tennessee Vols are annually (since the divisional split in 1992) the most overhyped team in the SEC.

The information used to determine the most overhyped team is based on the SEC media's pre-season prediction versus how the standings actually play out.

Tennessee, for whatever reason, is typically predicted to finish better than they actually do by the SEC media.

Here's what CBS sports had to say about the Vols:

Tennessee chimed in as the most overrated team in the SEC since the split ahead of 2018, and finished dead last in the SEC East to hold on to that dubious title. The only time the media has picked the Vols correctly in the SEC East was in 2015, when they finished second behind Florida in the division. Tennessee hasn't met its preseason hype in any of the last three seasons.

This isn't all that surprising. For the last decade, fans and analysts have been waiting for Tennessee to "turn the corner".

Basically, everyone has assumed that UT would eventually get it right. But a series of bad decisions has led to a vicious cycle of hope and despair.

At this point, Tennessee has to prove they're worthy of being picked in the top half of the SEC East. You know, fool me once, shame on you. Fool me 11 times and, well, I'm not picking the Vols anymore.

Eventually the Vols are going to win the SEC East again. I have no idea when that will be, but I feel confident the media will still somehow miss when it comes to Tennessee.
