College Football News ranked the 14 SEC head coaches this week and Tennessee football's Jeremy Pruitt ranked near the bottom of the list (via 247Sports).
Pruitt came in at No. 10, just ahead of Sam Pittman, Will Muschamp, Derek Mason, and Eliah Drinkwitz.
Here's the full list:
- Nick Saban — Alabama
- Ed Orgeron — LSU
- Kirby Smart — Georgia
- Dan Mullen — Florida
- Gus Malzahn — Auburn
- Jimbo Fisher — Texas A&M
- Mark Stoops — Kentucky
- Lane Kiffin — Ole Miss
- Mike Leach — Mississippi State
- Jeremy Pruitt — Tennessee
- Eliah Drinkwitz — Missouri
- Derek Mason — Vanderbilt
- Will Muschamp — South Carolina
- Sam Pittman — Arkansas
When I first saw this list, my immediate thought was that Pruitt was way too low.
But after giving the list some thought, this is probably a fair ranking for Pruitt. At least for now.
If anyone is making a list based on career accomplishments, then there's no way Pruitt can rank higher on this list. Every coach ahead of him has accomplished more in their respective careers so far.
Now, if I was ranking coaches based on their potential, then Pruitt would be a lot higher. In fact, I'd probably have him in the top five. But for now, the Vols head coach still has a lot to prove.
If Tennessee is able to continue their momentum from the 2019 season into 2020, then I think we'll see Pruitt climb past Leach, Kiffin, and Stoops on this list.
Of course, that's entirely dependent on a season actually happening.
