We have said it all off-season, that this one was going to be different. In this off-season, the Chiefs have very important decisions to make. Every off-season is like that, so why is this one any different?

Well, the window for another championship is getting smaller. With the Chiefs and their available money over the next few years, Kansas City needs to win now. All of the big contracts, like Mahomes, are getting restructured, and money is getting pushed back.

However, the Chefs need to hit in the draft for a few reasons. For one, hitting in the draft will be more financially beneficial to the Chiefs due to rookie contracts.

With everything going on, there is good reason to believe the Chiefs will trade at least one of their first two picks, though.

Chiefs are very likely to repeat history in the draft

The draft is where players' careers start unless you are undrafted, of course. The Chiefs are good at drafting and have especially been so over the last few years. However, those first two picks may not even matter when draft day comes.

According to the history of Brett Veach as a GM, he has a history of trading his first-round draft picks. In fact, he's traded every single one since 2017 outside of the 2020 draft when he selected Clyde Edwards-Helaire with the 32nd overall pick in the first round.

It all started 2017 the Chiefs did maybe the greatest thing ever for the organization. Brett Veach traded up in the draft to get Patrick Mahomes. He traded the team's 2018 first-rounder in order to move up and select the future NFL MVP. Veach is the man fans should thank for the rest of their lives, as he was trying to convince everyone in the draft room the Chiefs should take him. That pick, I guess you could say panned out.

In 2019, Veach traded a 2019 first-round pick -and a second-rounder- for former Seattle Seahawk Frank Clark. Many people would say that this trade didn't work out because of Clark's play as of late, but I respectfully disagree. Clark was amazing in the Super Bowl run in 2019.

In 2021, the Chiefs were coming off of a brutal loss to the Buccaneers in the Super Bowl, in which Kansas City needed some help on the offensive line. They eventually traded their 2021 first-rounder for Orlando Brown Jr. to the Ravens. This trade definitely worked, as well.

The Chiefs have some important decisions to make, and there is no hiding that. However, with the two back-to-back picks they have in the first round, we could see the team switch it up a bit.

Kansas City could maybe package both trades to move up in the draft, and get a more established player at whatever needs they value the most currently. They could even trade the picks for a potential high pick next year. Or, they could trade one pick, we do not really know.

Whatever decision does get made on draft day, Chiefs fans should be confident in the choices the front office makes. Veach's history shows that.

His history also shows that he isn't afraid to trade a first-round pick if he sees a player he likes/wants. Having not just one, but two first-rounders in the 2022 draft nearly guarantees that he will make a move this year. Especially when considering he has two picks in each of the next three rounds, as well.
