DeMarcus Lawrence has been a hot topic of discussion lately. Rumblings of the Cowboys moving on from the two-time Pro Bowl defensive due to salary cap reasons have been rapid, but an NFL insider is saying pump the breaks on that.
According to a source close to ESPN's Ed Werder, Lawrence isn't going anywhere and will be back for the 2022 season.
It was reported last week that the Cowboys asked Lawrence to take a pay cut but he declined. Lawrence is set to make $19 million in 2022. The Cowboys would save $8 million against the cap if he's released before June 1 and $19 million after that date.
Dallas recently restructured the deals of Dak Prescott and Zack Martin to help with the salary cap. Doing the same with Lawrence would create $12 million in additional dollars. This is what makes the Cowboys moving on from Lawrence for salary cap reasons unwise because they don't have to.
The Cowboys have another defensive end to decide on, Randy Gregory. He's a top priority in free agency for Dallas without a doubt, and the Cowboys are hoping for a long-term deal after not placing the franchise tag on him. With Dorance Armstrong also headed for the open market, the Cowboys would have a disaster on their hands if Lawrence were to leave as well, so from a roster standpoint keeping him is essential.
Lawrence may not produce big sack numbers anymore but he still puts pressure on the quarterback. Plus, he's the Cowboys' best run defender, and with their issues stopping the run, losing Lawrence wouldn't be ideal.
Time will tell how everything works out with DeMarcus Lawrence. However, it would behoove the Cowboys to do whatever it takes to keep him.
