Jerry Jones is always in the headlines for his outlandish statements and philosophies. Lately, however, the news surrounding Jones hasn't been all that pleasant, to say the least.
That's because ESPN recently reported that the Cowboys paid $2.4 million to former cheerleaders in a settlement accusing former team executive Rich Dalrymple of voyeurism. Jones didn't address the situation afterward, leaving many to wonder when -or if- he ever would.
Jones finally broke his silence on the matter Friday.
"First of all, the cheerleaders are iconic. A vital part of what our organization is, the Dallas Cowboys," Jones said in an interview with NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth. "We took these allegations very seriously. We immediately began to look-see, an investigation into the situation. I can assure you that had we found that it need be, there would have been firings or there would have been suspensions. As it turns out, in the best interest of our cheerleaders, and the best interest of the organization, in the best interest of our fans, what we decided to do was show the cheerleaders how seriously we took these allegations and we wanted them to know that we were real serious and so the settlement was the way to go."
The incidents involving Dalrymple went beyond the cheerleaders. Randy Horton, a lifelong Cowboys fan, posted on Facebook that something disturbing happened in regards to Charlotte Jones, the daughter of the Cowboys owner. He said that in the Cowboys' "war room" during the 2015 NFL draft, Dalrymple violated Jones' privacy, and he even wrote to her directly.
"In case you haven't been made aware already, that guy Rich Dalrymple, who was sitting in the back corner of the war room last night, on several occasions reached over and took upskirt pictures with his phone during the LIVE STREAM!! My wife and I watched in amazement. It happened when you guys stood up celebrating when you learned that you would be able to pick the Jones kid. I believe Carolina was on the clock at the time. Go check it out!," Horton said.
Horton went into further detail when he spoke with ESPN about what he saw Dalrymple do, and it wasn't pleasant by any means.
"I'll never forget what I saw," Horton said. "The first time he reached out from a sitting position behind her, and she is standing with her back to him, and did it once … He looked at the screen, touched the screen and then did it again. The second time, he's sitting in a chair at the corner of the table on the left and he held his phone beneath the corner of the table with the camera side facing up where she was standing. And did it again.
"I have no doubt in my mind of what it was he was doing. It was obvious."
A communications consultant for the Cowboys, Jim Wilkinson, said that the team took the allegations involving Dalrymple seriously. The investigation included the phone of Dalrymple being looked at, and no wrongdoing was found by the team on his part.
"The organization took these allegations extremely seriously and moved immediately to thoroughly investigate this matter," said Wilkinson. "The investigation was handled consistent with best legal and HR practices and the investigation found no evidence of wrongdoing."
The NFL stated that they won't investigate the Cowboys over the voyeurism case. However, this situation wasn't ideal for America's Team and certainly soured people on their reputation.
