Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu will test the free agency market, according to multiple reports.

This news was seemingly confirmed on Monday morning when ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Kansas City is using the franchise tag on offensive tackle Orlando Brown.

If you're a Chiefs fan who is hoping Mathieu returns to KC in 2022, this probably isn't the news you want to hear.

Mathieu isn't likely to sign an extension before free agency opens — and who can blame him? I have no doubt that he's genuine in his desire to return to Kansas City. But at the same time, this could be Mathieu's last shot at a big deal in free agency. The former LSU star wants to maximize his earnings and the best way to do that is to hit the open market and create a bidding war.

And if this turns into a bidding war, it's easy to see a scenario where Kansas City doesn't end up re-signing Mathieu. Especially since the Chiefs are working on an extension with wide receiver Tyreek Hill. And they'll likely work on an extension for Brown.

There's only so much money to go around. And the Chiefs could view Mathieu as the easiest player of those three to replace (though I'm not sure that's the case — Mathieu means a lot of KC's defense).

A couple of weeks ago, I felt pretty confident that Mathieu would be back in a Chiefs uniform in 2022.

But now with this news, I'm starting to have serious doubts that Mathieu plays for Kansas City next season.
