Why Justin Reid can/can't replicate what Tyrann Mathieu did for the Chiefs
The Chiefs have been very blessed and fortunate to have the players they do, and to have the players they have had. The Chiefs have been very blessed and fortunate to have the players they do, and to have the players they have had. One of those is Tyrann Mathieu, who is without a doubt one of the best safeties in the entire NFL.
Mathieu's play recognition, physicality, and most importantly, leadership, are what make him so great. Any team in the league would and will be lucky to have him on their squad. And the Chiefs were.
While Tyrann Mathieu is amazing, there is a reason he is no longer on the Kansas City Chiefs. The two sides didn't see eye-to-eye.
While that is that, and it's in the past. The Chiefs have a shiny new toy on defense, that may or may not be able to replicate what Mathieu has done so far.
Reid can replicate some of Mathieu's KC success
Justin Reid is a very similar player to Tyrann Mathieu. As a matter of fact, they have had similar starts in their careers. The thing they have in common is being dominant on the Texans.
However, the Texans were not very good last year, or the year prior. In the NFL as a safety, it is hard to be good on a bad team. However, Justin Reid has shined through all of the Texans' woes.
Reid will be a good NFL safety, however, he will not replicate what Mathieu bought to the team.
Honestly, Justin Reid's contract is not that great. Let's just put it this way, which is in my opinion, the best visual for someone to compare players.
According to Pro Football Focus, Justin Reid finished last year with an overall grade of 50.8. If you keep up with anything PFF-related, that is not great. However, Reid's film is not as bad as the stats are.
For comparison, Tyrann Mathieu's grade was 67.3. That may not seem like the biggest difference in the world, but it somewhat is.
The Chiefs still got a great player in Justin Reid, who is also physical like Mathieu. However, Reid cannot, and will not replicate the leadership and voice in the locker room that Mathieu was.
I greatly look forward to seeing how good Justin Reid is for Kansas City, on a good team. However, do not expect him to be Mathieu, because he isn't.
