Drake Maye's future is bright as the University of North Carolina quarterback gets closer to finding out where his next home will be. And there are a few teams that are more likely to land the top ranked quarterback.
The Chicago Bears, Washington Commanders, and New England Patriots all have the first three picks in the 2024 NFL Draft, and each one is expected to pick a quarterback. So the top three available are Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, and Maye.
While Williams is almost certainly headed to Chicago, Maye and Daniels could either end up with the Washington Commanders or the Patriots. And on Monday, Maye spoke with ESPN's Adam Schefter about the possibility of landing in New England on the NFL Insider's podcast.
“New England, I mean, it's hard not to talk about The Dynasty, you know, you think of the GOAT. That’s what you think of when you think of New England you think of the GOAT, Tom Brady," Maye said. "So, just a place with— that’s had a lot of success and had some years lately that they haven't been as successful and looking to get back on track and I know that's, you know, right there near Boston. These are three great sports towns you’re talking about now."
"So, all great places to play and, you know, I think a great spot to be a, you know, franchise quarterback at and that’s what I’m working towards,” he added.
At this moment, it makes a lot of sense for Maye to land in Washington rather than New England, with the quarterback having played with Sam Howell at North Carolina. But you never know what a team is thinking.
Maye earned the starting roll at UNC in 2022, after Howell left to go to the NFL. During his first year as a starter, he finished with 342 completions for 4,321 passing yards and 38 passing touchdowns, along with 184 carries for 698 yards and seven rushing touchdowns.
This past season, he had 269 completions for 3,608 passing yards and 24 passing touchdowns, along with 112 carries for 449 yards and nine rushing touchdowns.
So in short: any team would be lucky to land Maye.
