One of the bigger storylines this offseason for the Cleveland Browns is Nick Chubb.

After suffering a serious injury in Week 2 of last season, the Browns running back is working his way back from the tough blow. The issue is he is due a cap charge of $15.8 million coming off of the serious injury.

That is a number the Browns can’t bring back with the risk, on the other hand, it would be hard to see Chubb walk. During his media availability at the NFL Combine on Tuesday, GM Andrew Berry pointed out the importance of Chubb, while essentially saying the run game was able to survive without him.

“We were pleased with how the run game turned out throughout the year. Nick is one in a million, maybe one in a billion. So, we’re not going to get the consistent explosive runs that you get with the best back in football,” Berry explained.

Jerome Ford ran for 813 yards at four yards per carry and Kareem Hunt provided Cleveland a short yardage back. Neither of the backs was Chubb though. When the Pro Bowl back went down in Week 2, the Browns did lose the explosive running identity for the most part.

“When you have a difference maker like Nick and someone that can create at the level that he can, he can truly elevate that area of the game. We did have to learn to run without him and we were able to do it effectively enough, but obviously, Nick is a difference-maker.”

When you have a back that is good for 1,000 yards a season in his sleep, it would be tough to cough up.

In the end, the Browns are going to need to spread his money out over two years, or he’s going to take a pay cut. The overall feeling is that Chubb will be back in Cleveland in 2024, but nothing is in writing yet. Berry’s comments today point toward just that.
