The 2024 NFL Scouting Combine is underway, which means the Kansas City Chiefs have officially begun meeting with draft prospects.
While most prospects will meet with all NFL teams informally, the allotted 45 formal meetings are where the real work happens. Missouri DL Darius Robinson has been one of the rising stars of the pre-draft process leading up to the combine. Of course, the Chiefs wanted to get with him for a formal interview and see what all of the fuss was about.
"Yeah, I met with the Chiefs," Robinson said, via Starcade Media. "It was a great interview. Seeing Andy Reid — G.O.A.T., the DC (Steve Spagnuolo) — G.O.A.T., the D-Line coach (Joe Cullen) — G.O.A.T., you know they have a great program over there."
An understandable reaction from the prospect after back-to-back Super Bowl wins by Kansas City. Prospects have seen how the Chiefs have been able to use their young players and do it quickly under this coaching staff and they want to be a part of it.
The fifth-year senior recorded 43 total tackles, 36 quarterback pressures, and eight sacks during the 2023 college football season with Mizzou. His five seasons in Columbia, Missouri have made him quite partial to this area of the country and he ceded to reporters that he'd love to stay in the area.
"That'd be awesome," Robinson said. "I love Mizzou, man. That's my second home. I tell people, I'm from Michigan and Missouri."
Missouri DL Darius Robinson's fit with the Chiefs:
Versatility is the name of the game for Robinson. It's part of the reason that A to Z Sports' Nick Roesch viewed him as a fit for Kansas City well before he arrived in Indianapolis for the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine. Not only is he talented rushing from the edge, but his burst and power on the interior can overwhelm guards.
He told reporters on Wednesday that he's comfortable playing and winning from up and down the entire defensive line.
“I can play every position, I can play the zero to the nine (technique)," Robinson told reporters "I'm physical, I'm going to run, I'm going to hit somebody. I can do everything. I just want an opportunity to put my cleats to the ground and play as fast as I can.
That's a skillset the Chiefs could need. They're working toward a long-term extension with Chris Jones, but there is no telling if that will happen after how things went last season. The team's other most prominent inside/outside D-Lineman, Charles Omenihu, suffered a torn ACL in the AFC title game and is unlikely to be available at the start of the 2024 NFL season.
Robinson told reporters that he studies Jones because of his ability to play inside/outside. He'd like his game to have evolved enough in the NFL so that he's one day compared to Jones.
"Yeah, I mean, he's who I want to — five years from now I want to be like, 'Darius is like Chris Jones,' he said. "That would be an awesome accomplishment. But he's just a great player."
