The Pittsburgh Steelers enter the offseason with a multitude of dilemmas to address. Among them, the Steelers will have to decide on just who will be under center for them come Week 1 of the 2024 season.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin did issue a vote of confidence to Kenny Pickett during his end-of-season press conference last month, but he also confirmed that the second-year passer will face "competition" to be the team's starting quarterback.

The Steelers have since been linked with a few passers, including Chicago Bears' Justin Fields. The former Ohio State standout faces uncertainty regarding his future in Chicago. The Bears own the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, and all signs point to them using it to select former USC quarterback Caleb Williams.

The Steelers may not have to offload much if they wish to bring in Fields. Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer speculated in a recent notebook column that it may just take a pair of draft picks for the Bears to pull the trigger on a trade involving the dual-threat quarterback.

"Would probably be a Day 2 pick and a Day 3 pick," Breer wrote. "Then, you have to make a decision on whether or not to pick up his fifth-year option, which would give you two years of runway to figure out whether or not he’s your guy at a price of about $25 million ($3.2 million for next year, and around $21 million or so for the fifth-year option)."

Since Fields was selected in the opening round of the 2021 NFL Draft, his rookie contract includes a fifth-year option. Chicago or any team that ends up acquiring Fields has until early May to make a final call on whether to exercise the option.

Fields posted an 86.3 passer rating over 13 games played in the 2023 campaign.
