San Francisco 49ers star running back and 2023-24 Offensive Player of the Year Christian McCaffrey had not dropped a football since Week 7 of the 2023 regular season — nearly four months ago.
But on Sunday during Super Bowl LVIII, McCaffrey lost the ball on the Niners' first drive of the game following a hit by Kansas City Chiefs City linebacker Leo Chenal.
Chiefs defensive end George Karlaftis recovered the fumble for a costly turnover.
After the game, McCaffrey reflected on his mistake and the 49ers' 25-22 Super Bowl loss to Kansas City.
"First thing, I can't put the ball on the ground on the first drive. It's going to sting, put that on me," McCaffrey told reporters. " … It hurts deep. It's something you dream about as a kid, we've worked so hard for all year and come up short. Think you just have to go through all the emotions as they come but each day just chip away getting back to back to normal. I don't know how long it's going to take. It's still fresh and it still sucks."
While McCaffrey's dropped ball will be a hard one to forget, he did make up for it by scoring the first touchdown of Super Bowl LVIII in the second quarter.
McCaffrey finished the night running the ball 22 times for 80 yards and a fumble. He added 80 more yards and a touchdown in the air on eight targets.
You could see the physical pain in McCaffrey's eyes during his post-game interview and even he got extra emotional when he revealed which Niners veteran he hurts for the most.
"For a guy like Trent [Williams], who is a captain, a leader on our team, McCaffrey said, "… It just kind of sucks having to look him in the eye and know that we didn't get it done."
Sunday was Williams' first Super Bowl appearance in his 13-year NFL career and he might not ever get that chance again, but he plans to return in 2024 to run it back.
