San Francisco 49ers receive brutal news about Kyle Shanahan that will impact the 2026 season
It wasn’t how the San Francisco 49ers would have wanted the beginning of training camp to begin, especially for Kyle Shanahan.
The San Francisco 49ers got some difficult news, as head coach Kyle Shanahan suffered significant injuries in a car accident earlier in the week, and he will be limited to start training camp. He broke his nose, three ribs, hand, concussion, and needed more than 40 stitches in his face.
Car accidents can be brutal, and this was no exception. ESPN’s Nick Wagoner highlighted that drugs and alcohol were not involved.
“Shanahan was taken by paramedics to the local hospital, where he spent much of that day before being released. The other driver was not injured, per Palo Alto lieutenant Nicholas Martinez.
“Martinez said drugs and alcohol were not involved and both drivers were cooperative with the police. No one was cited for the collision. “Consistent with our standard release of information procedures in such cases, we do not release information regarding the cause of the collision, or which party may have been at fault,” Martinez said.”

Wagoner also highlights that Shanahan has been recovering at home, and is believed to be healing well. We will hear more from general manager John Lynch on Saturday afternoon. Right now, assistant head coach and offensive line coach Chris Foerster will “assume some of” Shanahan’s duties and lead the team to start training camp.
That will be a difficult task for Foerster, especially with all of the chaos currently going on with Brandon Aiyuk. Things have been contentious with Aiyuk for some time, and Foerster will likely have to answer those questions once he takes the podium.
As things currently sit, the 49ers will have a unique start to training camp, but Shanahan has a talented staff who can keep things going. Luckily, Shanahan is healing well, and we wish him the best in his recovery.
