Jets QB Zach Wilson already doing 'legwork' to find a potential landing spot in a trade
This isn’t exactly breaking news, but Zach Wilson will likely be traded this off season. The question now becomes to who and for what. This isn’t exactly breaking news, but Zach Wilson will likely be traded this off season. The question now becomes to who and for what.
I wrote recently about the “haul” I expect the Jets to receive for Wilson’s services next season and I think too many have the compensation projected far too low. And I think Wilson is terrible.
But before the Jets can start negotiating, they must know who they are negotiating with. And now they are getting a little help in finding a suitor for Wilson himself.
According to ESPN NFL Insider Jeremy Fowler, Zach Wilson has begun doing legwork on potential new teams, including teams that would be good fits. Wilson is reportedly looking for an offensive minded coach, which he has never had. And to be perfectly honest, the ones he has had have been terrible.
The Jets have agreed to gauge Wilson's trade market, and it's only natural for a player and his agent to do some legwork to set the stage for a deal.
This comes just days after Jets owner Woody Johnson took a shot at Wilson when speaking to reporters. "We have all this talent, and we have to deploy talent properly. So I think they all got the message. This is it. This is the time to go. We've got to produce this year."
According to the report, when asked specifically by reporters about the team’s need for a backup, Johnson agreed.
"You need a backup quarterback," he said. "We didn't have one last year."
Whether the Jets have actually given Wilson permission to seek a trade is still unclear, though. Jets general manager Joe Douglas said in January that there was a “high probability” the Jets would target a veteran backup QB.
Following the regular season finale victory against the New England Patriots, Joe Douglas made it clear he was going to take care of the Jets before he worried about where Zach goes. “Yeah, so obviously, Aaron’s going to be back, which is going to be positive, and it’s going to be huge,” Douglas said. “I had a good conversation with Zach and I can assure you when it comes to Zach, and I’m not going to go into the specifics of our conversation, but we’re going to do what’s right for the team, so I had a good conversation with Zach and we’re going to get together after these player exit interviews and get with the staff and put our gameplan together for the offseason.”
Their targets to upgrade their backup QB situation this offseason could include Ryan Tannehill of the Tennessee Titans, Jacoby Brissett from the Washington Commanders, or Gardner Minshew from the Indianapolis Colts who will all be unrestricted free agents.
Jets Offseason Road Map: Three players that have to go
After another heartbreaking year and extending their North American sports leading playoff drought to 13 seasons, it’s time for the Jets to focus on the offseason. The Jets won’t be looking at any major changes to the coaching staff, so they will be focused solely on the draft and NFL free agency to finally end […]
