The Kansas City Chiefs have designated running back Jerick McKinnon to return from injured reserve, opening his 21-day window to practice.

McKinnon has been on injured reserve with a groin injury since late December. He also underwent surgery for a core muscle and a fractured pelvis. A report from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport says that McKinnon has a "very real chance" to play on Sunday, which would be a pretty amazing feat.

For comparison, Chiefs' tight end Blake Bell had a similar surgery last season and missed 14 games. McKinnon playing again in under two months would be remarkable. There's no doubt that he's motivated not just to win another Super Bowl, but to do it against his former team, the San Fransisco 49ers.

McKinnon was crucial to the Chiefs' success on offense last season and for their Super Bowl LVII win. He finished second on the team in receiving touchdowns in 2022 with nine, seven of which coming in a five-game span. He set an NFL record by becoming the first RB in history to record a receiving touchdown in five consecutive games.

In Super Bowl LVII, McKinnon made the heads-up decision to slide down instead of scoring a go-head touchdown, which allowed the Chiefs to drain more time off the clock and secure the win. He wasn't able to carry over the same magic in the 2023 regular season, but he did find the endzone five times. McKinnon's abilities as a pass blocker give quarterback Patrick Mahomes some extra protection and he'll serve as another receiving weapon out of the backfield.
