Training camp underdogs emerge each and every summer. It’s the best of NFL training camps across the league. And while the Kansas City Chiefs have a whole bunch of time left before the regular season kicks off, there’s an underdog name within their draft class that may be worth watching as things progress.
Kansas City has overturned their secondary this offseason. Some familiar faces are back after time away, like L’Jarius Sneed. An infusion of young talent offers some new upside, too. But the Chiefs’ group is ultimately going to be different no matter what. Trent McDuffie out of the picture and young Nohl Williams shining early in camp. But the early days of Chiefs camp have also been kind to Jadon Canady.
Kansas City Chiefs rookie Jadon Canady is an underdog to watch
Canady’s road to the NFL was anything but linear. He started his college career at Tulane before transferring to Ole Miss, then ultimately landing at Oregon for his final season of eligibility. Despite the winding path, he’s had a strong nose for the football going all the way back to high school, when Canady logged nine interceptions during his senior year.
Why were schools initially hard to come by? And how did he slip to the fourth round despite some strong tape to close his college career? Canady profiles primarily as a slot corner and is listed at 5-foot-10, 181 pounds. His breakout season at Oregon featured just 27 defensive snaps on the perimeter. That’s not the profile NFL teams covet when they’re looking at the cornerback position early in the draft. But his slot work at Oregon was legitimately impressive, and slot corners who can make plays on the football have real value in today’s NFL.
So as free agent signing Kader Kohou acclimates on his way back from injury, Canady’s early camp momentum will be interesting to monitor. Kohou, for what it is worth, was torched by Xavier Worthy for a deep touchdown on Thursday. These kind of surprise success stories spring up every year in camp. And while Canady’s not there yet, he’s made some buzz to try to build on with the Kansas City Chiefs. I’ll be watching.
